Key Assessment Areas

At Pro Trainers UK, we adhere to the guidelines established by NPORS & ITSSAR to ensure that our road roller training courses meet the highest standards of excellence. Our comprehensive assessment reports are tailored specifically to each training session, providing assurance that participants are proficient in all aspects of road roller operation.

Pre-Operational Checks: Participants are assessed on their ability to perform thorough pre-operational checks on the road roller. This includes inspecting fluid levels, tires, brakes, lights, hydraulics, steering, and other essential components to ensure the machine is properly working.

Manoeuvring: Trainees are evaluated on their ability to manoeuvre the road roller safely and effectively in various conditions, including on different types of terrain, slopes, and in confined spaces. Forward and reverse operations, turning and stopping, are assessed to ensure precise control of the machine.

Operation: Participants are assessed on their operational skills, including the correct use of controls, throttle, brakes, and steering. They must demonstrate the ability to operate the road roller smoothly and efficiently while adhering to safety protocols and traffic regulations.

Compaction Techniques: Trainees are evaluated on their compaction techniques, including achieving the required compaction density and uniformity across different surfaces. Proper alignment, overlapping, and speed control are critical aspects assessed during this phase of the assessment.

Safety Practices: Safety is paramount in road roller operation. Participants are assessed on their knowledge and implementation of safety practices, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), maintaining a safe distance from other workers and obstacles, and adhering to site-specific safety protocols.

End-of-Shift Procedures: The assessment includes evaluating participants' ability to perform end-of-shift procedures, such as parking the road roller safely, shutting down the machine, securing it from unauthorised use, and conducting a final inspection for any defects or maintenance requirements.

The Practical Test and Its Importance

Our road roller training culminates in a practical test, a crucial step towards certification. This test, validated and approved by either NPORS, LANTRA, ITSSAR or Quality Assurance (depending on your preferences) is a comprehensive evaluation of your crane operating skills. Passing this test signifies that you have attained the proficiency required to operate a roller safely and effectively. It's important to note that this test is not just a formality; it's a rigorous assessment that ensures you are ready for real-world plant operations.

Specific Job Training: Tailored to your workplace, this stage includes training on specific handling attachments and knowledge of the work environment.

These changes include an updated marking sheet, where certain faults may now score higher, reflecting the emphasis on safety and precision in operations. Additionally, the test now includes a written component, where candidates are expected to achieve a minimum score of 80%. This includes both multiple-choice and open questions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of road roller operation.
