If you’re applying for most CSCS cards, you’ll usually need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test at the right level for your role. This is the test many people refer to as the “CSCS test”.
We don’t provide classroom training for the test. Instead, you prepare in your own time (similar to a driving theory test), then book a 45-minute appointment at our Manchester (Irlam) test centre to sit the HS&E test in a quiet, professional setting. The HS&E test lasts 45 minutes and contains 50 questions.

What is the “CSCS test”?
There isn’t a separate test run by CSCS. The test people usually mean is the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test, which is used as part of CSCS card applications.
At our Manchester test centre, you book a slot to sit the CITB HS&E test. If you tell us the card you’re applying for (or your job role), we can help you check which version of the HS&E test you should book.
How long is the test?
The CITB HS&E test lasts 45 minutes and contains 50 questions.
Your booking is a 45-minute appointment to complete the test within the official time limit.
Do you provide CSCS training as well?
No — this page is for our CSCS test centre (HS&E test appointments), not classroom training.
You revise in your own time before attending your appointment. CITB provides official revision materials (books and apps) if you want something structured to work through.
What do I need to bring on the day?
You’ll need valid ID that meets CITB’s test ID policy (it must be in-date and include your name and a recognisable photograph).
We also recommend having your booking details to hand, so check-in is quick and straightforward.
Can I book voiceover, BSL, or other support?
Yes, CITB provides options like voiceover and British Sign Language (BSL) video through the booking system, with further support available via their additional support route.
If you need any assistance, mention it at the point of booking so the right setup is in place for your appointment.
How do I apply for my CSCS card after passing?
After you pass the correct HS&E test, you apply for your CSCS card through the official CSCS application process — CSCS handles the card application and approval.
If you’re unsure which card type you need, it’s worth checking before you book, as different roles can require different tests and qualifications.
Can I reschedule my booking?
Rescheduling rules depend on the standard CITB booking terms and conditions.
