Key Assessment Areas

  • Pre-Operational Checks: Ensuring trainees can perform detailed inspections of the pedestrian forklift, including forks, carriage, mast, chains, battery, and all safety features such as guards, brakes, and steering mechanisms. This guarantees the forklift is safe to operate before use.

  • Manoeuvring: Evaluating the ability to navigate the pedestrian forklift through a challenging chicane/obstacle course, demonstrating control and safety in both forward and reverse directions, with and without loads.

  • Alignment: Assessing precision in executing tight 90º turns in confined aisles, both left and right, forward and reverse, which is crucial for pedestrian forklift operation in narrow spaces.

  • Transportation: Testing skills in safely driving the pedestrian forklift around the workplace, including navigating various challenges such as ramps, uneven surfaces, and obstacles, with different load conditions to simulate real-world scenarios.

  • Stacking: Measuring competence in stacking and de-stacking tasks at various heights and configurations, including ground level, eye level, and high-level positions, both in open areas and within pallet racking systems.

  • External Transport: Verifying the ability to efficiently load and unload lorries, vans, trailers, or rail wagons by driving on and off or operating from ground level, ensuring the safe handling of goods for external transport.

  • End of Shift Procedures: Confirming that trainees follow proper end-of-shift protocols, including refuelling (if applicable), safely parking the forklift, securing it by applying the parking brake, removing the ignition key, checking for any defects, and ensuring the equipment is left in a safe and secure state.

The Practical Test and Its Importance

Our pedestrian forklift training culminates in a practical test, a crucial step towards certification. This test, validated and approved by either NPORS, LANTRA, ITSSAR or Quality Assurance (depending on your preferences) is a comprehensive evaluation of your forklift operating skills. Passing this test signifies that you have attained the proficiency required to operate a pedestrian forklift safely and effectively. It's important to note that this test is not just a formality; it's a rigorous assessment that ensures you are ready for real-world forklift operations.

These changes include an updated marking sheet, where certain faults may now score higher, reflecting the emphasis on safety and precision in operations.
