Key Assessment Areas
At Pro Trainers UK, we adhere to guidelines established by NPORS & ITSSAR to ensure that our staff receive comprehensive training that meets industry standards. Our assessment report for hoist and winch training encompasses various crucial points to certify the competence of our trainees in all aspects of the course.

Safety Awareness Session: During the safety awareness session, participants are educated on the hazards associated with the use of construction passenger or goods hoists. This includes understanding safe working load marking, erecting, inspecting, and testing construction hoists. Additionally, participants learn about the functions of all main components and are instructed on safe operating practices in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

Pre-start Checks: Trainees undergo rigorous pre-start checks to ensure the proper functioning and safety of hoists and winches. This includes inspecting hoist way enclosures, landing gates, cage/platform gates, and electrical/mechanical interlocks. Additionally, suspension devices, masts, travel limit switches, guides, safety gear, winches, counterweights, electrical components, and buffers are thoroughly examined for any signs of damage or malfunction.

Goods Hoists Operation: Participants operating goods hoists are tasked with raising and lowering loads to all platform levels. They are responsible for ensuring the security and weight of each load before operation, prioritizing safety and efficiency throughout the process.

Passenger Hoists Operation: For those operating passenger hoists, the focus lies on safely transporting passengers to different levels. Trainees must demonstrate the ability to stop the hoist at the correct landing points, ensuring the safety of all passengers on board. They are also trained in using agreed signal codes for effective communication during operations.

End of Shift Protocol: At the end of each shift, trainees are required to park the hoist safely in the designated position, remove the key, and isolate the hoist from the main power supply. A thorough inspection is conducted to identify any defects, and any issues are reported immediately for timely resolution.
Testing and Certification Details
The Practical Test and Its Importance
Our hoist and winch training culminates in a practical test, a crucial step towards certification. This test, validated and approved by either NPORS, LANTRA, ITSSAR or Quality Assurance (depending on your preferences) is a comprehensive evaluation of your crane operating skills. Passing this test signifies that you have attained the proficiency required to operate a hoist and winch safely and effectively. It's important to note that this test is not just a formality; it's a rigorous assessment that ensures you are ready for real-world operations.
Three stages of Training
Basic Training: This is where you'll learn the fundamentals of hoist and winch operation, including handling and safety procedures. It's the first step towards becoming a competent operator.
Specific Job Training: Tailored to your workplace, this stage includes training on specific handling attachments and knowledge of the work environment.
Familiarisation Training: Conducted on the job under close supervision, this stage allows you to apply what you've learned in a practical setting, ensuring you're comfortable and competent in your specific work context.
Test Revisions & Expectations
The practical test has undergone revisions to ensure it remains relevant and challenging. These changes include an updated marking sheet, where certain faults may now score higher, reflecting the emphasis on safety and precision in operations. Additionally, the test now includes a written component, where candidates are expected to achieve a minimum score of 80%. This includes both multiple-choice and open questions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of hoist and winch operation.
