Key Assessment Areas

  1. Pre-Operational Checks: Participants are trained to conduct thorough pre-operational checks, including inspecting forks, carriage, backrest, mast, chains, wheels & tyres, battery, guards, engine oil, coolant, fuel, hydraulic oil, rams & pipes, controls, brakes, steering, instruments, horn, attachments, and other essential components. This ensures that the forklift is in optimal condition before use.

  2. Maneuvering: During the course, participants navigate the VNA forklift through a test chicane/obstacle course, both forward and reverse, while handling various loads. This practical exercise enhances their maneuvering skills in tight spaces typical of very narrow aisles.

  3. Alignment: Participants execute precise 90º turns, both left and right, in forward and reverse directions within a working aisle configuration tailored to the specific characteristics of the VNA forklift being used. This ensures accurate alignment and efficient operation in confined spaces.

  4. Transportation: The course includes training on driving the VNA forklift around the working area, both laden and unladen, while navigating through challenging conditions such as ramps, uneven ground, low headroom, uneven loads, and wide loads. Participants learn to safely maneuver the forklift in diverse environments.

  5. Stacking: Participants practice bulk stacking and de-stacking of loads at varying heights, including ground level, eye level, and high level, as well as in front of a vertical face. They also learn proper stacking techniques within pallet racking systems to optimize storage space and ensure load stability.

  6. End of Shift Procedures: At the conclusion of each shift, participants are trained to perform essential end-of-shift tasks, such as refuelling the forklift, parking it in a designated safe area, placing the forks on the ground, applying the parking brake, removing the ignition key, placing the forklift on charge if required, conducting a thorough defect check, and ensuring the forklift is left safe and secure for the next operation.

The Practical Test and Its Importance

Our VNA forklift training culminates in a practical test, a crucial step towards certification. This test, validated and approved by either NPORS, LANTRA, ITSSAR or Quality Assurance (depending on your preferences) is a comprehensive evaluation of your forklift operating skills. Passing this test signifies that you have attained the proficiency required to operate a VNA forklift safely and effectively. It's important to note that this test is not just a formality; it's a rigorous assessment that ensures you are ready for real-world forklift operations.

Three stages of Training

Basic Training: This is where you'll learn the fundamentals of VNA forklift operation, including handling and safety procedures. It's the first step towards becoming a competent operator.

Specific Job Training: Tailored to your workplace, this stage includes training on specific handling attachments and knowledge of the work environment.

Familiarisation Training: Conducted on the job under close supervision, this stage allows you to apply what you've learned in a practical setting, ensuring you're comfortable and competent in your specific work context.

Test Revisions & Expectations

The practical test has undergone revisions to ensure it remains relevant and challenging. These changes include an updated marking sheet, where certain faults may now score higher, reflecting the emphasis on safety and precision in operations. Additionally, the test now includes a written component, where candidates are expected to achieve a minimum score of 80%. This includes both multiple-choice and open questions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of VNA forklift operation.
