Key Assessment Areas

  • Pre-Operational Checks: We emphasize the importance of comprehensive inspections, ensuring trainees are proficient in checking every aspect of the high-reach forklift, from forks and carriage to all critical safety systems, ensuring the equipment is in perfect condition for safe operation.

  • Manoeuvring: Trainees are assessed on their ability to skillfully navigate the high-reach forklift through an intricately designed chicane/obstacle course, demonstrating proficiency in both forward and reverse, with varied load conditions.

  • Alignment: Precision in executing 90º turns in both directions and in both forward and reverse motions within a confined aisle space is crucial, particularly given the added complexity of operating at significant heights.

  • Transportation: The ability to safely drive the high-reach forklift around the workplace is tested, including handling challenges such as ramps, uneven surfaces, and various load types, reflecting the unique demands of high-reach operations.

  • Stacking: Competence in safely stacking and de-stacking at heights well above 12 metres is critically assessed, including both bulk stacking in open areas and precise placement within pallet racking, at ground level, eye level, and high level.

  • External Transport: Assessing the ability to load and unload various transport vehicles by driving on and off or from ground level, ensuring trainees can manage external transport tasks with the high-reach forklift effectively.

  • End of Shift Procedures: Ensuring all trainees follow stringent end-of-shift protocols, including securing the forklift safely, conducting a thorough check for defects, and leaving the equipment in a safe, secure state for the next use.

The Practical Test and Its Importance

Our Reach forklift training culminates in a practical test, a crucial step towards certification. This test, validated and approved by either NPORS, LANTRA, ITSSAR or Quality Assurance (depending on your preferences) is a comprehensive evaluation of your forklift operating skills. Passing this test signifies that you have attained the proficiency required to operate a reach forklift safely and effectively. It's important to note that this test is not just a formality; it's a rigorous assessment that ensures you are ready for real-world forklift operations.

Specific Job Training: Tailored to your workplace, this stage includes training on specific handling attachments and knowledge of the work environment.

Familiarisation Training: Conducted on the job under close supervision, this stage allows you to apply what you've learned in a practical setting, ensuring you're comfortable and competent in your specific work context.

Test Revisions & Expectations

The practical test has undergone revisions to ensure it remains relevant and challenging. These changes include an updated marking sheet, where certain faults may now score higher, reflecting the emphasis on safety and precision in operations. Additionally, the test now includes a written component, where candidates are expected to achieve a minimum score of 80%. This includes both multiple-choice and open questions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of reach forklift operation.
