There are plenty of accidents involving machinery in the industrial world. But we do not always think of potential accidents that can befall workers in a more pastoral setting, or wherever machinery is actually involved. Recently, however, a tragic accident in Denny caused a chicken farm to be fined around 10 thousand pounds. In this article, we will tell you more about this recent incident. We will also tell you more about how you can prevent such a thing happening where you work.

What Happened

A worker with over 15 years of experience on the farm, Ian Stewart, was struck by a forklift. As a result Stewart’s ankle was broken and he suffered pelvic injury. In this case, it was not the negligence of the driver that caused the accident. Instead, it was the lack of high visibility safety clothing that the employer had failed to distribute to any workers. Even the lights on the forklift were turned off because the lights might cause stress in the chickens. Aviagen, the firm who owned the company, plead guilty to the charges, agreed to pay the fine, and underwent subsequent assessments.

Preventing This at your Business

Obviously not all businesses can afford a 10 thousand pound fine. Unlike this farm, you must take precaution before something like this happens to you. With a simple risk assessment, this chicken farm could have found that more lighting was needed in the area. They would have also found out that high visibility clothing in this situation is a must. Safety should always be at the top of your list in priorities, no matter your business. And machinery and forklifts can always pose a real risk of injury, no matter the industry you are part of.
