AXA delivers tech for UK Forklift trucks03 Jul 2018, by Forklift Training News in
Insurance company AXA has recently released a safety initiative for forklift trucks in the UK. Together with their partners VUE who develop telematics and CCTV, they have come up with specialist technology that sits inside the vehicle and hopes to reduce accidents by instilling more positive behaviour.
Alarmingly, a massive 42% of deaths in the workplace are down to on-site transport, such as forklift trucks, according to the UK’s Health and Safety Executive. AXA itself received approximately 281 claims for accidents which involved a forklift truck between March 2017 and March 2018.
What is this safety initiative and how does it work?
The safety system is comprised of two onboard cameras, on facing the driver, the other facing forward, which are linked up to an online monitoring system that allows AXA to review and assess the data immediately. There is also a black box recorder installed on each vehicle that stores the speed, location and braking patterns of the driver. These statistics can then be processed and each performance is given a rating which can be viewed online.
But what does AXA have to do with it, they just provide cover, don’t they?
AXA have repeatedly said that they are not just an insurer and deal in far more than just processing claims and dishing out compensation. Their firm held a belief is in safety procedures and systems, just as the one above, to help to educate and raise awareness in drivers thus preventing accidents and lowering the rate of workplace injuries and fatalities.
But the key thing is not just to rely on technology but also to get the best possible training on how to use your forklift truck efficiently and above all, safely. After all, learning to operate a piece of machinery properly from the start instils it as a habit and offers a safer working environment for everyone.
